LAN's bosses and how to beat them: from the 42 to the Shapeshifter

Updated 26 October 2026 · by marcojlv

Bosses are the big moments of every run in LAN: they arrive with their own banner, their own music and a few surprises. There are 6 bosses and each asks for a different answer. This guide explains the rules they all share and how to beat each one. The first is in plain sight; the rest sit inside folds with a spoiler warning.

Rules every boss shares

  • There's a boss every 100 meters. Usually the 42, unless another one takes its place. If two bosses land on the same height, the rarer one stays.
  • While a boss is alive, waves come at half strength. You don't need to worry as much about the numbers around it.
  • Beat it and a calm zone follows: ten seconds with no waves and your letters' regeneration tripled. It's the best moment to spend whatever diphthongs you have left.
  • Every boss gives ten diphthongs.
  • Bosses have powers too. They take their zone's, so the 42 at 1,000 meters isn't the one at 100: it's a 42³. See number powers.
  • They make an entrance. Cinema bars and their name warn you, and they last the same whatever speed you're playing at.

The 42, "the Answer"

The everyday boss. Its name comes from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, where a supercomputer spends seven and a half million years working out the answer to life, the universe and everything… and gets 42. In LAN, when it loses half its health, it splits into four 2s: "4 × 2".

How to beat it:

  • Get ready for the split. When it splits, four numbers appear at once. Letters that hit several targets (Cleave, for instance) are the best at clearing that moment.
  • Make your front row hold. The 42 hits hard for what you have in the first meters; your front letter's health is the first thing worth upgrading before 100 meters.
  • Tap. Your taps ignore defenses and grow with height.
Spoiler: the 666, "the Beast"

It shows up at 666 meters and every 666 meters after that, on top of that stretch's boss. It's bigger than a regular number, takes a huge amount of punishment and wears horns.

How to beat it: it's an endurance test more than a tactical one. Arrive with your front row's health and defense upgrades already bought, mix damage types so none of its defenses slow you down, and use the fact that waves drop to half while it's alive to pour taps and diphthongs into it.

Spoiler: the 1000, "Thousand"

It shows up at 1,000 meters and every 1,000 meters, taking the place of that stretch's 42. Every time it loses a quarter of its health a digit falls off, turns into a 0 and fights on its own.

How to beat it: the problem isn't just the 1000, it's the zeros it sheds. The 0 has sky-high literary defense and also cancels the first hit it takes, taps included. Bring numeric damage and fast-attacking letters: the first hit on each zero is wasted, the next ones aren't.

Spoiler: Infinity (∞)

It has no set height. From 800 meters, every time a 0 dies there's a 2% chance the system "crashes": the screen glitches and ∞ slips through, three times the size of a number. If another boss is on screen, it waits for it to finish.

  • Every 12 seconds it opens a void under one of your letters that swallows it whole a second and a half later: it falls as if it had been beaten.
  • Every 5 seconds it lets out a shockwave that sweeps the board and hurts all your letters.
  • When it dies, it splits into two zeros that have to fall almost together (within 2.4 seconds of each other). If not, the first one comes back.

How to beat it: look after the whole squad's health, not just the front row's, because the shockwave hits everyone; letters that heal and shield are gold here. For the ending, keep some area damage at hand or get ready to tap like mad: both zeros have to fall together. If you have R (Revive), it will bring back the letters the void swallows.

Spoiler: Fibonacci

It shows up at 1,597 meters, at 2,584, at 4,181 and at 6,765… which are, of course, numbers in the Fibonacci sequence (each one is the sum of the two before it). It starts with small numbers from the sequence: each one you beat brings the next, and the last one is the boss. The boss casts the golden number, a spiral that hurts all your letters every few seconds. Every time it returns, the sequence goes one number further and the boss is bigger.

How to beat it: as with Infinity, the damage reaches the whole squad at once, so healing, shields and regeneration count. While you work through the sequence, don't rush: every number that falls brings the next, stronger one.

Spoiler: the Shapeshifter (?)

From 2,000 meters, one stretch boss in four is the Shapeshifter instead of the 42. Every time it loses a quarter of its health it takes the shape and quirk of another number: first it dodges like the 7, then it heals like the 69 and finally it vanishes now and then like the 404. You can always tell it by its chameleon eyes.

How to beat it: match your pace to each phase. While it's a 7, tap all you can: your taps never miss, even though your letters' attacks do. While it's a 69, land all your damage back to back so its healing can't keep up. While it's a 404, it vanishes for two of every five seconds: neither attacks nor taps reach it then, so strike when it comes back.

Tips for any boss

  1. Arrive with your front row upgraded. Diphthongs spent before the boss count for more than the ones spent during it.
  2. Use the calm afterwards. Ten seconds with no waves and triple regeneration: spend what you have left there.
  3. Don't neglect the numbers around it. Waves drop to half, but they don't disappear.
  4. Mix damage types. That way no high defense, the boss's or its escorts', leaves you without an answer. More ideas in the squad and formations guide.
